WHAT IS IT? The Alpinestars Tech 1 boot is an
entry-level boot that offers some of the same features
from their high-end boots at a great price. The Tech
1 retails for $199.95 compared to the $269.95 Tech 5,
$369.95 Tech 7, $499.95 Tech 8 and $599.95 Tech 10.

WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that
stand out with the Alpinestars Tech 1 boots.
(1) Construction. The Alpinestars Tech 1 boot has
many of the same features as their Tech 5 boot, including their one-piece TPU-injected insole, reinforced metal
shank, the bio-mechanical pivoting ankle and the classic
A-Stars DNA. The two biggest differences between the
Tech 1 and the Tech 5 boots are the soles and buckles.
The Tech 5 has bonded soles, while the Tech 1’s soles
are welted (sewn on), and the number of buckles is four
on the Tech 5 and three on the Tech 1.
( 2) Weight. Would you prefer a heavier boot that
offers more protection or a lighter boot with less bells
and whistles? This is the question every racer has to
ask himself when selecting a boot. There are pluses to a
boot that has added cladding, pivots, guards and ridges,
but where do you draw the line of how much protection
is too much? The more weight you have attached to
the far end of your legs, the more stress you put on the
knee joint when the pendulum effect comes into play at
speed. The Alpinestars Tech 1 boot is one of the lightest
plastic-encased boots on the market, coming in at 3. 45
pounds. For a point of reference, the Alpinestars Tech 10
comes in at 4. 70 pounds.
( 3) Protection. You might think that it would feel
as if we were wearing bedroom slippers with the light-
weight Tech 1s on our feet, but we felt protected. Where
support was needed, higher-density plastic was added.
( 4) Comfort. The Alpinestars Tech 1 boot has an
athletic-style fit. Even though it doesn’t have a bootie, it
hugged our feet to the point that the boot/foot interface
felt like a single unit. It made us feel planted on the footpads compared to bigger, wider and heavier boots. There
were no hot spots, and break-in was seamless. Since
there are only three buckles, we were especially careful
to make sure the buckles were on the tight side, especially the bottom two. When they were looser, we felt
some heel lift (when your heel would slide up inside the
boot). Every tester loved how light the boots were.
( 5) Durability. Alpinestars’ soles are renown for
the grippy rubber compound, which provides maximum traction but has tended to get chewed up fast.
The Alpinestars Tech 1 sole is constructed from a
stiffer material. They might not be as tacky, but they
offer much better durability. The good thing about a
welted sole is that it can be replaced or repaired by any
experienced boot cobbler.
( 6) Options. The Tech 1 is offered in black, white or
black/white and comes in U.S. sizes from 5 through 16.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? We didn’t have any major
complaints apart from the slight heel-lift issues.
Who could imagine that you could get
Alpinestars’ boots for under $200? This boot is
a steal for the quality it offers.
