lot, and I love the new bikes. It has made me hate the
old bikes that I used to race on, although I can still hop
on that type of bike and go pretty fast. I’m impressed
with all of the development that has happened with the
four-strokes. Yamaha started all of that. I love the four-strokes, because you can use engine braking to slow

DO YOU HAVE ANY OF YOUR OLD RACE
BIKES? I used to have my 1973 Championship bike,
but I sold it about 10 years ago to an American motor-
cycle collector from San Diego. He heard through the
grapevine that I had my winning bike, and he collects
Championship bikes. The guy made me a good offer, so
I parted with it. He offered to allow me to come and see
my bike in his museum, and I thought that was nice. In
fact, he shipped the bike to Orlando last year and put it
on display when I was getting inducted into the AMA
Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
WHEN YOU RIDE NOW, DO YOU STILL GET
THAT FEELING OF GOING FAST? I still feel like
I’m going fast, even though I don’t go that fast anymore.
I don’t think that sensation ever leaves. To this day,
I get anxious in the moments before the gate drops.
It’s an amazing feeling, and part of what makes racing
so great. ❏
