WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition camera. (1) Black. The Hero3 is the latest first-person point-of- view camera from GoPro. GoPro released three versions of the Hero3: the White ($199.99), Silver ($299.99) and Black ($399.99) Editions. The White targets amateurs, the Silver is aimed at prosumers, and the Black Edition satisfies the needs of professionals. At $400, the Black Edition might seem expensive, but you get what you pay for. The Supercross footage shown on TV of James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto and Davi Millsaps is captured with the Black Edition. We thought it advantageous to test the cream of the crop from GoPro. ( 2) Options. The Black Edition shoots video in a variety of resolutions, including high-definition 1080 and 1440, along with 4K cinema, and at a very fast frame rate (up to 60 frames per second at 720 and 1080 resolutions). The field of view can be adjusted from an ultra-wide, fisheye perspective to more-realistic medium and narrow views. Additionally, the camera can shoot quality photos up to 12 megapixels and can shoot at a burst rate of up to 30 photos per second. ( 3) Accessories. Aside from a range of mounting accessories, including the very unique tripod ($7.99)
and chest harness ($39.99), GoPro offers several other appealing options. We tried the LCD Touch BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote (each cost $79.99), both with moderate success. The touchscreen was helpful for finding the proper camera angle, and we could also review footage on the spot; however, it significantly drained battery life if left on during recording. The Wi-Fi remote was convenient for minimizing downtime while recording, and the range was quite impressive, but we’d invest in the Battery BacPac ($49.99) to significantly extend battery life. ( 4) Performance. GoPro has done an outstanding job of continually improving the performance of the Hero- series cameras. The Hero3 is no different. It outshines the Hero2 in every way—from video to photo to sound quality. Be mindful that we tested the most expensive edition of the Hero3, but history has shown that GoPro steps up its game with every new release. Among the POV cameras that we have tested, the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition is the gold standard.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? The port cover is easy to lose. It’s not critical (since the camera is protected by a waterproof housing), but it’s a nuisance.
The GoPro Hero3 Black Edition is the camera by which all others will be judged. If you aspire to become a You Tube sensation, look no further than the Hero3 Black Edition.
