This helmet came from a time
when I was designing a new visor.
It’s a fiberglass visor. I looked at
some of the lines on a Ferrari and I
liked the hood, so I decided to paint
the Ferrari car and incorporate the
horses. I made a special aluminum
clip so that the visor could be
adjustable. The Bell helmet has
two screws on each side, and I
designed a clip to change the angle
of the visor.
For a while in the 1990s, I was
painting a lot of helmets for MXA.
Jody Weisel gave me my start.
For the first five years, I designed
one-off helmets, but Jody always
wanted orange helmets and the
MXA logo. He wanted the design
to be simple, because then the
helmets could be traded among the
riders. A few of the designs that I
first made for MXA were actually
used by some big stars. The Indian
headdress, for example, was used
by Scott Russell.
