“Beast from the East”
Damon wanted something radical with a lot of attitude, and he
really pushed my imagination. This was the first helmet I painted
with super-thick pinstripes. I used bright yellow and made the
lines really stand out. I painted a large rebel flag on the back
with a skull that had an arrow through the eyeball.
Jeremy was going to wear this helmet when he was doing the parade
lap at Anaheim 1 for his final year; however, it rained so hard that they
canceled the parade lap. He put the helmet on twice—once in the motor
home and the other when he got on his bike—but then the opening
ceremonies were canceled.
It took me a while to figure out how to make the crown. I bought
curtain-rod knobs, painted them and then glued them to the helmet. It
was heavy! A lot of work was put into the helmet, and I’m still bummed
that no one was able to see it.
