Eduardo Gutiérrez Torralba 2014
Ithink all motocross racers are track designers in that when they go out into an empty field, vacant lot or quarry to
ride, they begin stringing sections together.
And that is what I did as a kid. I got my first
taste of building AMA National tracks because
MXA test rider Lance Moorewood’s dad, Ted,
was the promoter of both the 1978–’ 79 Escape
Country and 1980–’ 84 Saddleback Nationals.
Ted would let Lance and I throw our
two cents into the design of the
tracks, but really, apart
from Suicide Mountain and the Magoo Double,
Saddleback was an iconic track that didn’t
leave much room for creative ideas. Escape
Country, now the site of Cota de Caza of “The
Real Housewives of Orange County” fame,
was a blank slate. It was so blank that we
actually laid the track out on a grassy
hillside—and raced on grass. Cool idea
until it rained.
