MY JOB INTERVIEW
After Saddleback closed, I designed tracks in much
the same way as all motocross racers—by complaining
about the track where I was racing. And that is how I
ended up designing the 1997 Glen Helen National track.
I was at the 1996 World Vet Championships and Glen
Helen owner Bud Feldkamp asked me what I thought of
his track. I told him that I thought it was “a joke” and
that it was a shame to have such a nice location and “do
absolutely nothing with it.” Rightfully proud of his track,
Bud got angry and walked away. But a few days later, he
called and asked what he should do to improve his
racetrack. His interest in the sport and willingness to
make changes impressed me. I told him that I would
come out and build him a new track. I added Mt. Saint
Helen the first day. When the track was done, it was
close to what you see today, although more elevation
changes were added with each passing year—and I have
had 17 years to iron out the wrinkles.
