WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that
stand out with the Bridgestone Battlecross X40 front tire.
(1) Replacement. Bridgestone’s new Battlecross X40
tires are replacing the old M603 front and M604 rear.
Over the last few years Bridgestone’s presence on the
AMA circuit has diminished significantly. Finally, they
are fighting back with replacement tires for the well-regarded 403/404 and 603/604. The new-and-improved
breed of Battlecross tires may be the underdogs in the
motocross market, given that Bridgestone relinquished
the top spot to Dunlop a few years ago.
( 2) Changes. Both the old Bridgestone M603 and
M403 have symmetric tread designs. Their replacements,
the X30 and X40, have asymmetric tread designs. Why?
The Bridgestone engineers believe that the asymmetrical
design optimizes block placement to achieve a stable grip
under hard braking and aggressive cornering. The new
design of the X40 front tire is also supposed to increase
its versatility compared to the previous M603.
( 3) Performance. We admit that we were a bit con-
fused about what terrain this front tire should be used in.
In baked, hard-packed conditions, it was hard to find con-
sistency with the X40; however, our test riders found that
the softer the terrain, the better the ride. Then again, that
might be because the knobs tended to fold on hard dirt
unless we jacked up the air pressure. In hard-packed
conditions where the speed was much slower, such as
tight, offroad trails, the results were better; but, then
again, we are motocross riders. We appreciate the idea
of building a soft-compound tire so it will have more flex,
which in turn will produce a larger contact patch with the
ground. We just didn’t feel the X40 front tire had the right
formula for a motocross track. Be cautious if the track you
are riding has just been watered and you’re running the
X40 front; it will feel as if you have slicks on.
( 4) PSI. The MXA testers experimented with psi to get
the best results possible. We found that when running
anything lower than 13-1/2 pounds per inch, the tire
would squirm when under pressure. The best pressure for
a consistent feel was right around 14 psi. The higher psi
made the X40 feel a bit loose, but it was consistent, so we
knew how to react.
( 5) Options. You can also run the Bridgestone X30
front with the X40 rear. We have had great luck with this
front tire in many conditions. It even one-ups the popular
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? The side wall is too soft for
fast-paced racing conditions.
The Bridgestone Battlecross X40 front tire is
something we could live with, but we prefer its
brother, the X30.
