WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that
stand out with the Torc1 Reaction shifter.
(1) Construction. The Torc1 Reaction shifter is
built from forged 6061 billet aluminum using a CNC
manufacturing process. The shifter arm and splines are
hard-anodized to increase durability and strength. The
tension spring and pivot hardware are enclosed in the
shifter tip to reduce wear and tear and to keep dirt
from jamming the tip in an undesirable fixed position.
The grip on the shifter tip uses a 1.5 to 2.5mm knurling
process to provide traction for your boots. The Reaction
shifter comes with a 5mm extension that screws into the
end of the tip and a 5mm nut extension that screws onto
the bolt. An OEM-style 8mm hex bolt is included.
( 2) Stock. Every OEM shifter on the market, save for
the 2016 KTM design, is vulnerable. The 2016 KTM’s
shifter tip is fully enclosed. The Torc1 Reaction shifter is
similar to the KTM’s. We have lost count of the number
of times dirt or small rocks have jammed the shift tip
inward, resulting in the inability to shift. If we’re lucky,
we can free it by kicking at it, but normally we have to
pull off to the side of the track to jimmy the dirt loose.
( 3) Performance. We wish every bike came with the
tension spring and pivot hardware enclosed in the shifter
tip like the Torc1 Reaction shifter. This gave
the MXA test riders peace of mind that the shifter tip
would not get stuck in a race. We like that the Torc1’s
knurling pattern increased the grip on the tip over
stock. The Reaction shifter has a bulky tip box that
creates a steep lip that your foot will slide on until it
hits the grippier shifter tip. We are splitting hairs with
this complaint, but our test riders could feel it when
riding. Depending on the size of the MXA test riders’
feet, the 1/4-inch-longer Reaction shifter was either a
hit or a miss. Riders with bigger feet enjoyed the extra
room. Our faster test riders didn’t need the extra 5mm
increments, as their riding technique focused on having
their toes turned in while shifting. Slower test riders
felt more confident with the wider tip because they
missed fewer shifts.
( 4) Options. The shifter tips are available in red, blue,
orange, green and yellow.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? The enclosed shift tip box is
bulkier than most OEM shifters, creating a steep transition to the grip of the shifter tip.
This is a four-star product for riders with
big feet and because of its fully enclosed
shifter tip. But, for riders with small feet or
perfect technique, it doesn’t offer
