AMA NATIONAL AMATEUR
CHAMPIONSHIP
July 26-Aug. 1 ....... Hurricane Mills, TN
Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, Mike Alessi has come oh-so-close to
winning the 250 National Championship (2006 and 2007). He finished second in
the 450 National series in 2012 and was the 450 outdoor points leader in 2009
through the early rounds until he broke his kneecap. In recent years Alessi seemed
to have lost a step. We blame injuries. Still, there’s no question that Mike Alessi
could still win outdoor motos.
If so, then why is he skipping the start of the AMA Nationals to compete in the
British and French GPs? Plus, he says he will do some of the Canadian Nationals
also. According to team owner Mike Genova, “We’re focusing on the core objec-
tive of motorsport racing—promoting our team and sponsor products. Instead of
chasing points in a given series, we’ve chosen to use multiple series to market to a
worldwide audience via the MXGP, CMRC and USA Outdoor Nationals.”
What does this unusual race program schedule do for Mike Alessi? (1) It elim-
inates Mike from having the opportunity to win either the AMA or FIM titles. ( 2)
It exposes Alessi to different fans and organizations. ( 3) It gives his Smart Top
spa sponsor exposure in Europe—assuming they have distribution in England and
France. ( 4) It shows a lack of confidence in winning any title in the future. ( 5) It
leaves everyone wondering how well Mike could have done in the AMA Nationals
this summer. We’ll never know.
