LEATT 5. 5 NECK BRACE
MXA test riders immediately noticed that the Leatt 5. 5
brace sat lower than previous Leatt braces. Leatt’s goal
was to make a brace that a wider variety of riders could
wear without complaining about lack of movement.
VERDICT: The 5. 5 is part of the new generation of
neck brace designs—easier to adjust, sleeker looking
and lower profile. There is a trade-off in overall protection, but Leatt hopes to expand the number of neck
brace-wearers by making neck braces more appealing.

K&N XSTREAM AIR FILTER
One of the best traits of a K&N XStream filter is that
it doesn’t need to be cleaned as often as a foam filter
because of its larger, pleated surface area. Plus, K&N has
a filter care kit that includes cleaner and air filter oil.
VERDICT: A fabric filter is an entirely different
animal from the typical foam air filter. Instead of
oil-soaked reticulated foam, fabric filters use fine strands
of oil-soaked cotton material sandwiched between
two layers of wire screen. The filter’s surface area is
increased by the pleated design.

ALPINESTARS TECH 7 BOOT
The new Tech 7 is significantly different from the old
version. It has greater support, a new dual-compound
sole, a dual-compound footbed, as well as a new buckle
system that’s directly off the revised Tech 10.
VERDICT: Test riders gushed about the comfort and
feel of the all-new Tech 7. It was more flexible, weighed
less and cost $230 less than the Tech 10. If you’re
strapped for cash and/or don’t care for bootie boots,
then might we suggest the Tech 7? It’s the decaffeinated
version in Alpinestars’ high-end line of boots.

DECAL WORKS RESTYLE CRF250/450
DeCal Works CRF side panels allow you to replace
four different Honda side panel parts with two unified
side panels/number plates. As an added bonus, the
injection-molded DeCal Works CRF side panels fit tighter
against the chassis, so the boot marks and scuffed-up
bulges of the stock parts are a thing of the past.
VERDICT: Although the DeCal Works CRF side panels
won’t make your bike faster, they are sensible replacement
parts. It is a cool mod that simplifies and cleans up the
look of 2013–’ 14 CRF450s (and 2014 CRF250s). ❏
