MXA’S LIST OF RACEDAY-ESSENTIALS
• Ice chest
• Tire pump
• Chain lube
• Spare tube
• Shade canopy
Aside from the obvious—dirt bike, gasoline, gear bag—there are a number of essential items that will help make your day at the track a good one.
You’ll find that these things are as good as gold when
you encounter an unforeseen circumstance. Don’t leave
home without the following:
This should go without saying, but many riders fail to
bring a toolbox with them to the track. It’s poor planning.
Make sure that your toolbox is stocked with the requisite
items: screwdrivers, wrenches, tire spoons, tire gauge,
hammer and punch, as well as a sag scale.
How often does a fellow rider ask to borrow your tire
pump? Don’t be dependent on others. Always carry a tire
pump. Tires lose air pressure when the bike has been
sitting for an extended period of time. Always check
air pressure before riding, and make sure you have the
appropriate tool to achieve the desired pressure.
Flat tires happen. Prevent a shortened riding day by
carrying a spare front and rear tube for your bike. Even
if you don’t know how to fix a flat (shame on you),
someone will be able to swap the blown rubber and
get you back on the track. We always keep spare tubes
stowed underneath the seat in our trucks.
It sounds unimportant, but chain lube is a vital part
of bike performance. A lubricated chain prevents drag
on the drivetrain, allowing the engine and suspension to
work properly. Lube your chain before your first riding
session of the day and any other time it’s necessary.
Body temperature spikes when riding motocross. Heavy
gear doesn’t help, which is why we always bring an ice
chest stocked with ice and bottled water to the track.
It’s refreshing to drink a cool beverage after a grueling
moto. An ice chest is also a smart idea for storing
You don’t need to spend your life’s savings on a
motorhome. A shade canopy (we recommend E-Z Up:
www.ezup.com) is the way to go. Protect yourself from
the elements and invest in a canopy. It takes up little
space in the back of your truck and is simple to set
up by yourself.
A folding chair might be an extravagance for some, but
we don’t leave home without one. It offers better comfort
and support than the tailgate of a truck and is perfect in
conjunction with a shade canopy. After all, shouldn’t your
time in the pits be enjoyable? We think so, which is why
we love heavy-duty fabric folding chairs. ❏
