AUGUST 2012 / MOTOCROSS ACTION 27
Surprise! The 2013 CRF450 comes with two
mufflers. Why? Honda states that the design
allows for greater power while meeting 94
decibels. The dual mufflers weigh slightly more
than a single muffler, but are significantly
shorter. The goal is to have the weight closer to
the bike’s center of mass.
A host of changes target an increase in low-end and midrange
power, as well as greater durability. These updates include a
new camshaft, larger exhaust valves, a high-compression
piston, new port shapes on the intake and exhaust sides, and
revised fuel-injection settings.
The Kayaba 48mm Pneumatic Spring
Fork uses air pressure to provide
spring resistance in place of steel
springs. This fork design is 1.76
pounds lighter than the previous
fork. The forks can be made stiffer or
softer by adding or taking out air. It’s
a simple procedure that’s ingenius.
