HONDA CRF450 Spring rate: 5. 5 kg/mm Hi-compression: 2 turns out Lo-compression: 12 clicks out ( 14 clicks stock) Rebound: 8 clicks out Race sag: 100mm Notes: Most MXA test riders prefer to run a stiffer 5. 7 kg/mm shock spring. Selecting the proper spring rate is important for the overall feel of the chassis and to lessen kicking. As a rule of thumb, use free sag to determine whether the spring is stiff enough (try to get 30mm to 40mm of unladened sag).
KAWASAKI KX450F Spring rate: 5. 5 kg/mm Hi-compression: 2 turns out Lo-compression: 10 clicks out ( 8 clicks out) Rebound: 14 clicks out ( 19 clicks out) Race sag: 100mm Notes: We preferred the feel of
longer pull rods because they lowered the rear end and stiffened the initial part of the shock’s stroke, lessening the KX450F’s tendency to wallow under acceleration.
KTM 450SXF Spring rate: 5. 7 kg/mm Hi-compression: 1-1/2 turns out Lo-compression: 12 clicks out Rebound: 15 clicks out Race sag: 100mm (105mm) Notes: We don’t think that the average 450SXF rider will need a stiffer shock spring (unless he is over 200 pounds). Smaller riders can live with the stock spring by turning the compression dampers out.
SUZUKI RM-Z450 Spring rate: 5. 7 kg/mm Hi-compression: 2 turns out Lo-compression: 12 clicks out Rebound: 12 clicks out Race sag: 100mm Notes: The rear shock has a dead
feeling, but perhaps that is the best sensation for a bike with such a hyperkinetic chassis. We set the sag at 100mm and used the high-speed compression adjuster to adjust chassis height in motion. We turned it out to lower the rear and turned it in to raise the rear depending on the track layout and surface.
YAMAHA YZ450F Spring rate: 5. 8 Nm Hi-compression: 2 turns out Lo-compression: 12 clicks out Rebound: 9 clicks out ( 14 clicks out) Race sag: 105mm (100mm) Notes: Yamaha stiffened the shock spring and changed the damping to accommodate the spring change. The shock is configured to work better for heavier and faster riders than last year’s. Most MXA test riders preferred a lot more rebound damping than the stock 14 clicks out—we ran it at 9 clicks out. ;
