WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the Alpinestars Tech 7 boot. (1) Updates. It wouldn’t take an eagle-eyed boot connoisseur to differentiate the old Tech 7 from the 2014 edition. For starters, the boot structure has greater support and anatomical accuracy. The new dual-com- pound sole is more durable (note that the sole is still capped), and the ankle compartment helps to prevent injury thanks to progressive relief for torsional forces. There’s also a dual-compound footbed, as well as a new buckle system that’s directly off the revised Tech 10. ( 2) Durability. We’ve marveled at the longevity of our old Tech 7 boots, and the 2014 model seems just as rugged, if not more, especially in the ankle and buckle areas—although the sole is rather soft and shows signs of wear after a moderate amount of riding. Fortunately, the sole is replaceable. ( 3) Buckles. The Tech 7 retains the four-buckle strap system of the previous generation, with the top and bottom buckles facing inward, while the middle buckles are set in the traditional style. One of the biggest improvements to the new Tech 7 is the buckle design, which uses a hook-and-latch system.
( 4) Fit. Sizing is tricky with the Tech 7. MXA test riders who wear size- 10 street shoes had to wear size- 9 boots. This same fitment issue was evident with the new Tech 10. Unless you fall between whole shoe sizes or want extra room for your toes, buy the next size down. ( 5) Performance. Test riders gushed about the comfort and feel of the all-new Tech 7. The boot is more flexible than the Tech 10, weighs less, is $230 less expensive and lasts just as long. If you’re strapped for cash and/or don’t care for bootie boots, then might we suggest the Tech 7? It’s the decaffeinated version in Alpinestars’ high-end line of boots. ( 6) Options. The Tech 7 is available in a variety of colors, including red/white/blue (shown), white, black, black/green, white/black/orange, and white/black/ fluorescent yellow. Alpinestars offers the boot in whole sizes from 5 through 16.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? Three complaints: (1) We wish the sole was more durable and shift pad thicker. ( 2) If you want the bootie, the Tech 7 isn’t for you. ( 3) The Tech 7 has gone up in price by $90 since 2007.
The already-excellent Tech 7 boot just got even better, thanks to a list of performance upgrades. It might not be for everyone (we’re talking to you, bootie lovers), but it’s a quality boot for even the most finicky riders.
