RACER OF THE YEAR (HONORABLE MENTION): James Stewart.
The two-time 450 Supercross champ showed up to Anaheim 1 rejuvenated
and with a friendly candor. It was the old Bubba—a replay of the racer
from years ago, before the slew of injuries and his washout at several
other teams. Then Bubba’s confidence took a hit when he cartwheeled
through the whoops while chasing down eventual race winner Ken
Roczen. His luck didn’t improve when he scored only 27 points in three
consecutive races during the middle of the chase (Atlanta, Indianapolis and
Daytona Beach), while Ryan Villopoto garnered 65 points. Yet, at times,
Bubba made everyone else on the track, Villopoto included, look like
amateurs. Stewart strung together three wins in a row, with the most
masterful display of dominance in Toronto. Though he fell short of his goal,
it was refreshing to see the happy-go-lucky side of Stewart back.
