WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that
stand out with the AXO A2 boot.
(1) Break in. The AXO A2’s $475 price puts the boot
into the high-end category, competing against the Fox
Instinct and the Sidi Crossfire. With price needs to come
convenience. This is where AXO dropped the ball. The
boot is stiff. The break-in process is daunting. Our test
riders could not feel a thing at first, which led to missed
shifts and dragging the rear brake. The toe box is large
and wrapped in stiff plastic, making it hard to feel the
shifter. The A2’s break-in process takes more than a
single ride, but eventually the AXOs do break in.
( 2) Protection/support. AXO uses a reinforced-nylon anti-torsion brace that is designed with a hinge
system in the A2 boot. This added more support and
safety, but was a contributor to the boot’s extreme
rigidity. The A2 is one of the best boots for ankle and
foot protection once you adapt to it.
( 3) Sole. AXO’s A2 sole gets solid grip on the pegs.
The heel is at a good height, so you don’t feel like
you’re wearing high heels. The sole can be replaced
when needed, which might be sooner than you think.
With OEM pegs, the soles started to show significant
signs of wear after a couple races.
( 4) Weight. At 4. 4 pounds, the A2 is one of the
lighter boots in its price range. The lightness can be felt
on the track when sticking your leg out for turns and,
more important, when accidentally catching a foot on
( 5) Comfort. The inside of this boot is plush. The
cushioned ankle padding and the smooth lining of the
boot are highlights.
( 6) Sizing. The A2 boots come in sizes 5 through 13.
They come in full sizes only, with the exception of a size
10. 5. The sizing and fit are spot-on.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? We had several complaints.
(1) The A2’s toe box is very roomy, which made the
riders’ feet feel disconnected when they moved around.
( 2) The plastic parts are hard and stiff. ( 3) The sole wore
out at a rapid pace.
The AXO A2 is comfortable on the inside,
but we struggled adapting to some
of its peccadilloes.
