IF YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN
THE STATUS QUO
I notice in bike tests that MXA
complains about how weak the front
brakes on the Suzuki and Yamaha
are while raving about KTM brakes.
Why does that matter? You can buy
an oversize rotor for the RM and YZ
and make them just as good as the
Next you will say, why do we
worry about horsepower when the
owners of slow bikes can always
buy an exhaust pipe to make their
bikes faster? The problem with that
logic is that making mods after the
purchase adds to the overall price
of the machine. Exhaust pipes cost
$1000, which means that a $9000
bike would really be $10,000. Plus,
if you can make a slow bike fast
with the addition of an exhaust
pipe, think how fast you could make
an already fast bike with the same
exhaust system. The gains are
negated. As for oversize brake kits,
they cost $250 and don’t work as
well, although they do work better
than the stock brakes as the
dedicated systems on KTMs. MXA
tests new bikes the way they roll
off the showroom floor. ❏
