The 2017 Honda CRF450 has three maps activated by a button on the left
side of the handlebars. I’m interested in knowing what the horsepower differ-
ence is between the stock, mellow and aggressive maps.
The three maps aren’t as much about horsepower as they are about throttle response, feel and rev speed. For example, when it comes to horsepower,
the most powerful map is not the aggressive map but rather the stock map.
It makes approximately one horsepower more than the mellow and aggressive maps from off-idle all the way to 10,000 rpm. The aggressive map and
mellow map are identical in horsepower from off-idle all the way to 7700
rpm, where the aggressive map is one horse better until they reunite again
at 10,000 rpm. The mellow map gives up one horsepower to the stock map
and zero horsepower to the aggressive map until 7700 rpm. At this point, the
stock map makes two horsepower more than the mellow map.
However, horsepower isn’t what the maps are about, but power delivery,
throttle response and hook up. The mellow map has a more controlled run
through its powerband, while the aggressive map feels sharper, hard-hitting
and quicker. Most MXA test riders choose to run the stock map (one flashing blue light), because it makes the most horsepower with the best defined
Treat your two-stroke oil the same way
you do your wine collection.
WHAT IS THE LIFE SPAN OF
How long can a bottle of two-stroke
premix oil last? How long can an
open bottle last?
If you keep your oil bottles in a
cool, dry, dark place, then the oil
should last forever. However, once
you open a bottle of two-stroke oil,
you create an air pocket inside the
bottle (where the oil you poured out
used to be). This trapped air pocket
contains moisture (how much depends
on the humidity on the day you
opened it up). Even though you put
the cap back on, the moisture will
contaminate the oil in three months.
