People who buy motorcycles
based on magazine shootouts are
fools. Today’s modern bikes are all
capable of winning, and most are
too fast for the average person to
utilize the available horsepower. So,
what if one bike is marginally fast-
er than another, is a couple pounds
lighter or doesn’t turn as sharp?
They are all more than capable of
Your overall theory is foolish.
These are $9000 race machines.
Why would someone spend $9000
on a bike that is slower, heavier and ill handling? When you
go to Sears to buy a washing
machine, do you choose the one
that makes more noise on the spin
cycle, vibrates across the laundry
room floor and gets your clothes
90-percent clean, or do you buy a
machine that is quieter, smoother
and gets your clothes spotless? If
performance differences are important on $500 washing machines,
wouldn’t they be even more important on a $9000 purchase? MXA’s
shootouts don’t tell you which bike
to buy, but they give you the tools
to make an educated decision. As
for the concept that the average
rider can’t use all the power that
modern bikes produce, you obviously have never started in a pack
with 39 other riders. If you had,
you would be wishing you had
an extra horse or two. And you
wouldn’t be wearing that dingy
IRONMEN OF THE ISLAND
I hope that when my time to go
arrives, someone will take the time
to write as fitting a memorial for me
as Jody wrote for his friend Feets
Minert. The heartfelt friendship
between the two was obvious. I’m
sure that a life of competing against
each other on the racetrack made the
bond all that more intense. I never
saw Feets Minert race, given that I
wasn’t born until after BSA went out
of business, but my father raced in
Catalina and told me lots of stories
about the ironmen of the island.
IN PRAISE OF EDUCATION
In the future, please make it possi-
ble for us armchair MXA test riders
to understand what you are saying.
Here are some of my questions.
What’s a Texas Leaguer? What does
a resonance chamber do? Is Torx
related to torque in any way?
What’s a paschal? Does a Tech 10
really have 273 individual pieces?
What does iteration mean? What is
desmodromic? When did N/m
The left fork seal on my KX250F
leaks. I have replaced it twice and it
still leaks. Is there a better brand of
fork seals available?
Don’t replace any more fork seals
