After the three nights of racing, Kerim Fitzgerald from
South Africa was the 2017 Pune Supercross Champion, followed by fellow countryman Anthony Raynard. Following
up on the podium was MXA test rider Justin Muscutt.
The fastest Indian rider was Harith Noah of Team INK
Racing, who won the non-international class (local class
and Championship for India 2017) on a TVS bike.
“THE AMBULANCE GUYS TREATED
BRIAN’S LITTLE FINGER AS
THOUGH IT WAS A LIFE-OR-DEATH
Unfortunately, I missed the final moto on the third
day and awards ceremony, because I had to take Brian
Medeiros to the hospital. He broke his little finger in the
first moto of the third night. It was a shame, because he
had made the podium on both of the first two nights. The
promoter insisted that we ride in the ambulance to the
hospital. That was a mistake. The ambulance guys treated
Brian’s little finger as though it was a life-or-death situation. And it was, because they drove so crazy that we felt
we were cowboys riding a bucking bronco at the rodeo.
The ambulance guys were super calm, but we were in for
the ride of our lives to the hospital. We were sure that we
were going to end up having to go to the hospital for more
than a broken finger as we careened through scooters,
cows, dogs, beggars and pedestrians. I wouldn’t normally
recommend visiting a hospital in any foreign country, as
they are quite different than what we are used to in the
United States. In the surgery ward in India they don’t wear
shoes, which we found odd, since the filthy streets make
the people’s feet dirtier without shoes than with them on.
But, everyone was amazingly helpful and extremely polite.
We had them reset Brian’s pinky and opted to do surgery
once we returned to the U.S.

A few fun facts: India is the seventh largest and sec-
ond-most populated country in the world. They earned
their independence from Britain in 1947. Pune is a city
within Maharashtra. Scooters and motorcycles are the
number-one mode of transportation. KTM, TVS and Hero
all manufacture motorcycles in Pune.
After the race weekend was over, Brian, Justin, Daniel
and myself did some sightseeing. We went to the Shaniwar
Wada Palace Fort. Shaniwar Wada was built in the 18th
century, and there is a rumor that it is the most haunted
place in India. It is one of the most visited historical places
in Maharashtra, India. We also went to Raj Ghat, which is a
beautiful memorial where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
Of course, we all wanted to go to the Taj Mahal, where
upwards of 60,000 people visit every day, so we packed our
bags once again and headed for the airport. Our Uber driver was supposed to pick us up at 4: 15 a.m. but didn’t show,
so we had to schedule a second Uber driver. We finally
arrived at the airport with just 45 minutes to get through
the long lines at the ticket counter. When we got up to the
front of the line, they wanted a physical, printed copy of
the ticket, but we only had digital tickets on our phones.
With a 100 percent duty on foreign
motorcycles, the biggest class for locals
to race in is made up of small displacement play bikes modified for racing.
The sport of motocross
needs more fresh young
faces if it wants to grow.
Guess what? No place in
the world has as many
young people as India.
