MAY 2016 / MOTOCROSS ACTION 153
WHAT IS JACOB HAYES
PARTICULAR ABOUT? He’s
very sensitive about the handlebar angle, as well as the controls.
Jacob is also specific about the
type of throttle response he likes.
Arenacross is technical, and he
can tell when the throttle response
is slightly off. We began working
together at the Monster Energy
Cup in 2015, and since then I’ve
learned what he likes. If you work
long enough with a rider, then
you figure out what he likes. That
makes life easier. I’m able to get
Jacob’s handlebar placement with-
in a millimeter, but he will make
minor adjustments from there. He
likes running a seat hump, because
it keeps him forward on the bike
in starts and turns. He’s also very
particular about gearing. We jump
between sprocket teeth on any
given weekend, because Jacob
wants all the grunt he can get on
acceleration. If we can get an extra
tooth on the rear sprocket, then
we’ll do it.
WHAT ARE JACOB’S
STRENGTHS? He is aggressive.
We’re working on Jacob being
aggressive at the right times in a
race. There are 15 laps in a main
event, and those laps can go by
quickly. At other times, he’s battling and trying to make passes,
but it’s a matter of making the
decision to pass at the best time.
The goal is to get into clean air as
fast as possible without tearing the
bike up. Jacob can go from sixth
place to second in a matter of a
few turns, because he’s not afraid
to show a wheel.
