“Red Bud to me is all about the Fourth of July and the fans walking in. What amazes me is that, when
they are walking in, the fans don’t even have shoes on, and they are all dragging coolers and wearing
swim trunks. Red Bud is like a Fourth of July picnic. It’s the old-school roots of motocross. The fans
have their faces painted up and are sunburned, but they are totally into it. It’s a young audience—a lot
of teenagers. You can tell they all really look forward to the race every year, and it is so different from
California. A lot of the fans who live in Michigan only get to see the big guys race once a year, so it’s a
big deal to them. It’s all really cool.”
It is refreshing to see
that Ryan Villopoto still
feels the thrill of victory.
Of course, it helps when
you almost never suffer
the agony of defeat.
