WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand
out with the M.Pac Mini portable fan.
(1) Performance. M.Pac makes two distinctly different
motocross air conditioning units. First, the $240 M.Pac
portable air conditioner weighs 11 pounds and uses five
Polar frozen foam ice bricks to provide a cooling breeze
for a rider after the race is over. At 13 by 10 by 8 inches
in size, it can blow air that is 15 degrees cooler than the
ambient temperature on a hot body. MXA tested this unit
in our September 2014 issue. Second, new for 2015 and
the subject of this test, is the Mini fan. This smaller fan
weighs only 4 pounds. The battery pack measures 7 by 4
by 4 inches. It does not use ice packs but instead blows
a powerful blast of air via its 5-1/2-inch three-blade fan.
The cooling effect of both M.Pac fans can be enhanced by
misting water out of the spray bottle into the air stream.
( 2) Power pack. Power comes from a Black & Decker
18-volt power-tool battery. It will spin the Mini fan
continuously for five hours and can be recharged in
( 3) Uses. You might have noticed that Christophe
Pourcel goes to the starting line with a battery-powered
fan to blow cool air on him while waiting for the gate to
drop. Pourcel learned this from Formula 1 drivers who
have fans on their cowlings when waiting for timed
qualifying. The MXA test crew uses the M.Pac fan to
do the same thing. It has a strap that can be laced
around the handlebar to hold the battery pack in place,
and then the fan can be removed by your mechanic or
friend before the gate drops. We also used it to dry out
a sweaty helmet in the pits between motos, to blow air
directly into the radiators when the bike was running in
the workshop or to sit on our laps as we sat in the pits.
The M.Pac fan can also be used to keep babies cool in
strollers, soccer moms refreshed at tailgate events or a
dog cool in the back of a car.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? No major complaints. We
turned it on. It blew air. We turned it off. No drama.
