proves pivotal for winning a
Long a staple on the National
schedule, the Hangtown race date
around during its
tenure. From 1974 through 1983,
it was the first National of the year.
Then the Gatorback race in Florida
held that honor for 14 years before
being cast from the schedule. Glen
Helen took the opener slot for six
years, and then Hangtown was back
at the top of the schedule in 2004.
Since then the Northern California
track has hosted the opening
eight times. That
distinction came to an end
this year when MX Sports and Glen
Helen owner, Bud Feldkamp, reached
an accord. Glen Helen was the series
opener and Hangtown was pushed
back a week.
There’s a considerable amount
of prestige associated with being
the opening race of a new series.
A clean slate and the excitement
of the unknown tend to draw more
attention from the fans. Glen Helen,
with massive crowds, benefited from
being first, just as the Anaheim 1
Supercross was a packed house
